Roscommon's Chief Fire Officer says crews are still working to keep a series of fires under control in the west of the county. It follows the outbreak of a major fire in Gorthaganny yesterday afternoon which then spread to a significant area. Some residents were forced to leave the area yesterday evening as heavy smoke enveloped their homes. The road between Carrowbehy crossroads and Coney Island pub was closed for a time.
Fire-fighting helicopters remain in the area this afternoon as they work to douse forestry and surrounding bogland. Chief Fire Officer John Keane says every effort is being made to keep local homes safe:
