Nearly €3 million in funding has been allocated to the Shannonside region under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.
The funding provides strategic repair and maintenance of existing facilities together with the development of new recreational infrastructure.
Half-a million of that will reconnect Castlerea with its natural waterfront.
A ramp will be constructed to replace existing steps and upgrade the river path for accessibility to all users.

Meanwhile, funding of €200,000 has been announced for a popular amenity in south Leitrim.
The funding will see the Bóthar Na Naomh Trail extended past Cloone GAA Park to Creigharee Ancient Holy Well.
Local councillor Paddy O'Rourke says it's a 'gamechanger' for the walkway.

Elsewhere, €200,000 has allocated in Longford for the Development of a 4.2km limestone dust walking and cycling trail in Lissard, Rinvanny and Cranalagh More.
