There was a campaign urging people to spoil the votes in this election, as a form of protest.

Turnout has exceeded 60 per cent in Drumshanbo, Co Leitrim, in the presidential election, as polling closed at 10pm tonight.

Cortober in Carrick-on-Shannon also had a high turnout, at 55 per cent.

However, many areas in the Shannonside region reported low turnouts.

In Co Roscommon, meanwhile, the following turnouts were reported: Roscommon town - 45.64 per cent; Ballinasloe - 37.45 per cent; Castlerea - 43.5 per cent; South Roscommon - 55.36 per cent; Boyle - 48.4 per cent; and Ballaghaderreen - 30.8 per cent.

There was a campaign urging people to spoil their votes in this election, as a form of protest. And it's understood one woman in Boyle wrote 'oxygen-wasters' across her ballot paper, in one example of this.

Either Catherine Connolly (Independent) or Heather Humphreys (Fine Gael) are set to be crowned the 10th president. Jim Gavin (Fianna Fáil) also featured on the ballot paper, even though he withdrew from campaigning over a rental controversy.

The counting of votes will start at 9am tomorrow.
