Drumshanbo could be set for new refugee centre

Sinn Féin councillor Brendan Barry says any move to re-purpose the building to house asylum seekers is still a long way off.

A query has been submitted to Leitrim County Council regarding the use of of a former hostel as refugee accommodation.

It was submitted by Noel Whelan to the local authority on February 18th regarding a building in Drumshanbo, known locally as 'Doherty's Hall'.

It seeks to establish whether the premises, located on Church Street, is an exempt building and can be used as accommodation for those seeking International Protection.

It's believed the building could accommodate up to 20 people.

Leitrim County Council made a request for further information on the 13th of March.

The Sinn Féin councillor says a restaurant previously operated from the premises.
