There are delays to local rail services this evening following a fire on a train in Co. Roscommon. Irish Rail say a fire developed in the undercarriage area near the gearbox of one carriage on the 12:45 Heuston to Westport service. Around 100 passengers were onboard the service when it stopped near Glanduff National School earlier today. Irish Rail say the fire was confined to one area in the undercarriage, and no part of the passenger area of the train was affected. They confirmed that fire suppression systems were activated and the driver used fire extinguishers with the fire subsequently put out.
As a precaution and due to smoke, the driver arranged for customers to move from the relevant carriage to an adjoining carriage, and the fire services were alerted. Bus transfers for the passengers who were onboard the service are now being arranged. Irish Rail say disruption is expected on the Dublin / Westport route until further notice and also say bus transfers may be required on later trains.
