Co. Leitrim had the highest proportion of people living in highly remote areas.
The finding comes from the CSO's Urban and Rural Life in Ireland report.
The Central Statistics Office's report examines social and economic characteristics of life in Ireland across urban and rural areas.
Themes such as demographics, income, housing, health, education and commuting patterns were examined.
As of 2022, it was revealed that Co. Leitrim holds the highest proportion of people living in highly remote areas, at 52.8% - the highest in the country.
This was followed by Co. Roscommon at 26.6%, and 23.1% in Co. Longford.
Meanwhile, an average of only 8.9% of people across the Shannonside region live in rural areas with high urban influence.
Nationally, highly rural or remote areas had a greater proportion of families with all children aged 15 years and over, than any other area type.
