Councillor 'flabbergasted' by decision not to reopen RUH sterilisation services

The sterlisation service for the facility is currently being operated at Portiuncula University Hospital in Ballinasloe.

A Roscommon councillor says she's flabbergasted by the decision not to reopen a Central Sterilisation Services Department at Roscommon University Hospital. Cllr Valerie Byrne, who's a member of the Hospital Action Committee, was reacting to a recent statement by Saolta Healthcare Group. It was revealed at the most recent meeting of the Regional Health Forum West had no intention of opening the service at the Roscommon hospital.

Responding to a question from Cllr Gareth Scahill, the group confirmed it would continue its sterilization services for Roscommon at Portiuncula Hospital. It said it would not be reopening the CSSD at Roscommon University Hospital following an appraisal a number of years ago. Speaking to Shannonside News, Cllr Byrne expressed fears that the decision could lead to further promised services being removed from Roscommon:
