Leitrim County Council has rejected plans for a 15-metre-high telecommunications mast in county Leitrim. Planning permission has been refused for the proposed mast on Main Street Upper, Mohill. Plans submitted by Towercom Limited, also include antennas, a transmission dish, equipment cabinets and associated works. It was ruled that the mast could have an adverse visual impact on the area and would be out of keeping with the town's established character.
The site is located within an Architectural Conservation Area, where there are strict protections aimed at preserving the historic streetscape and overall appearance of the town centre. In its decision, the local authority said the scale and design of a free-standing telecommunications structure at that location would conflict with policies set out in the County Development Plan, which seek to safeguard the heritage and architectural value of designated areas. The developers have one month from the decision date to appeal the Council’s decision to An Coimisiún Pleanála.
