Contractors are being sought for a significant upgrade to the Defence Forces firing range in Athlone.
The Carnagh Firing Range in Kiltoom, South Roscommon has operated for a number of years and is used primarily as a training base for the Irish Army.
Soldiers and training platoons assigned to Custume Barracks in Athlone are the primary users of the facility.
Tenders have opened to complete works to the range including the construction of new stop butts and the removal of the infrastructure.
Stop Butts are earth mounds or barriers designed to contain all fired shots and prevent misaligned, errant or ricochet shots going beyond the bounds of the shooting range.
The tender also includes an earth embankment to create a new firing point and the raising of the existing 200 and 300 year firing points.
Applications for the works close on the 25th of February.
