Concerns Portiuncula University Hospital will lose its maternity services completely

It's after the HSE confirmed no high-risk mothers can have their babies there in the long-term.

There are concerns Ballinasloe hospital will lose its maternity services completely - like Roscommon lost its A&E in 2011.

It comes after the HSE confirmed no high-risk mothers can have their babies in Portiuncula Hospital in the long-term. Reviews into nine deliveries in the unit since 2023, including two stillbirths, are ongoing. East Galway councillor Declan Geraghty says he's concerned the unit will ultimately close down:

But Fine Gael TD Colm Burke doesn't think it will close down as it has significant numbers of maternity cases at the moment:
