A Sligo-Leitrim senator has called for debate on eradicating child poverty.
Labour Party's Nessa Cosgrove argues that child poverty is the result of political choices, and says the €750 million of VAT for restaurant chains or increased defence spending could instead be directed toward measures like enhanced child benefit.
Senator Cosgrove noted that almost 5,000 children are in emergency accommodation and that one-fifth of children in a wealthy country like Ireland still lack a decent standard of living.
