Chair of Longford Tidy Towns hopes proposed laws will deter illegal dumping

New powers would allow local authorities to utilise body worn cameras, CCTV, and drones.

New powers would allow local authorities to utilise body worn cameras, CCTV, and drones to track down those engaged in the practice.

The Irish Council for Civil Liberties says local authorities have used surveillance technology poorly in the past and safeguards must be put in place to protect people's privacy

Michael Keenan is the chairperson of Longford Tidy Towns.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show, he says illegal dumping remains a major issue and hopes the proposed legislation will act as a deterrent

"I welcome it 100%. It has been significant disappointment that it's taken so long. You have daft stuff about GDPR, that these couldn't be used and my understanding is that will come to an end, that prohibition due to GDPR, in around October. So, we warmly welcome that so that people can be identified. People can be identified but it's using it for the purpose of prosecution that's the key issue".
