Today's Sunday Independent/Ireland Thinks poll shows the Independent Galway TD is on 32 per cent, with Humphreys behind by nine points at 23 per cent.
The poll revealed Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin's score is at 15 per cent in the first poll since nominations closed.
He is faring badly with women, with just 10 per cent of female voters polled giving him their support.
Meanwhile, the party leader and Taoiseach Micheál Martin's approval rating is also down - he's on 43 pc, down one point on last month’s poll but still remains the most popular leader in the country.
Support for Fine Gael leader and Tánaiste Simon Harris has bounced back, up three points to 39 per cent, while Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has dropped one point to 34pc.
