Former justice minister Charlie Flanagan says Paddy Cooney showed a 'calm determination' amid assassination threats against him personally.
The Athlone man was justice minister during the height of the Troubles in the 1970s.
The Fine Gael man also held several ministerial posts in the 80s and was an MEP in the 90s.
He died on Saturday at the age of 94.
