Calls for minimum wage to be extended

Earlier this week, the Government voted against Labour’s National Minimum Wage (Inclusion of Young Persons, Apprentices and Interns) Bill.

A local Senator has called for the national minimum wage to be extended to young workers, apprentices and interns.

Sligo-Leitrim Senator Nessa Cosgrove told the Seanad apprentices, interns and young people continue to face unfairly low wages, with some first-year apprentices earning far below the minimum wage.

She said that minimum wage increases do not harm employment and argued that low pay limits opportunities.
