The Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise says he would welcome a reduction in the number of schools under catholic patronage.
Bishop Paul Connell has written to all catholic primary schools in his diocese, in relation to the future ethos of these schools.
It comes as the Department of Education is running a survey for parents on the type of primary school they would like their child to attend.
