The Bishop of Elphin admits there has been some criticism of strict rules on who can attend sacraments for children like communions and confirmations.

Concern has been expressed that families celebrating Communions could host large social gatherings which may lead to an increase in Covid transmissions.

Dr Anthony Breslin, a senior medical expert in the north-west, claimed that people meeting at events like funerals, communions and confirmations were a factor in Covid increases.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show Bishop Kevin Doran said there is no issue with the church-based aspect to the sacraments - but rather what happens after.

He said that strict guidelines there for everyone's safety - even if they upset some people:
