An Athlone Garda Sergeant is urging people not to let fear make them fall prey to an e-mail scam currently doing the rounds.
The scam involves people being sent an e-mail, allegedly from the gardaí, telling them that their computer is going to be seized in relation to investigations into child pornography, sex trafficking, or some similar 'judicial' crime.
Sergeant Andrew Haran from Athlone Garda Station says the scammers are trying to act on the fear that any person might have about such things appearing on their computers.
He says people should be aware that this is not the way the gardaí communicate with members of the public.
