Over 800 submissions have been received during the first of four public consultation periods on the completion of the Galway to Athlone Cycleway.

It follows the attendance of more than 500 people at a series of five public information events held over the summer by consultants who have been appointed to identify potential route corridors to finish the 270km car free cycleway between Dublin and Galway creating the potential for week long cycling holidays along the route.

The submissions are currently being reviewed and a dedicated project office has been established in Ballinasloe.

At this month's meeting of Roscommon County Council, members were told that the project team expects to publish a number of route options later this year.

In the meantime, all of the material that was on display at the open days is still available to view online at the website galwaytoathlonecycleway.com
