2022 the worst year on record for violence against women

Nine counties are still without refuge centres according to the TD.

87 percent of the murders of women were carried out by men known to them.

People Before Profit TD Brid Smith has called a rally outside the Dáil today, to highlight the number of women who face and experience violence in Ireland.

She says at least eight families are day are turned away from refuge centres and sent back into the arms of abusers.

Deputy Smith says despite promises, the Government has still not provided enough safe places for women seeking refuge:

'That's not good enough, we only have a third of what international standards have told us we need.

We've known this for a long long time so we need much more action on the practical resources that can help us protect women and combat gender based violence in the country.'
