The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine fined 17 farmers in the Shannonside region for illegal burning of land in 2025.
Under Section 40 of the Wildlife Act, 1976, it is illegal to burn vegetation on uncultivated land between March 1st and August 31st to protect nesting birds and habitats.
The department's direct payments division carries out systematic monitoring to detect burnt land using satellite imagery.
