133 unaccompanied learner drivers penalised last year in Leitrim and Sligo

Sligo-Leitrim TD Martin Kenny, from Sinn Féin, says there are several reasons for the big jump in his area.

The number of learner-drivers fined for not being accompanied by a qualified motorist, nearly doubled in Leitrim and Sligo last year. 133 people were penalised for the offence in 2024 - up from 68 the previous year.

They also increased in Roscommon, Longford and Mayo over the two-year period, rising from 261 to 265. Sligo-Leitrim TD Martin Kenny, from Sinn Féin, says there are several reasons for the big jump in his area:
