Wexford produced a strong second-half performance to score a nine-point victory over Longford.
It was a nightmare start for Longford, conceding a goal from Sean Nolan inside the opening three minutes. However, Dessie Reynolds’ two-pointer a couple of minutes later proved to be the response that Longford needed.
Dylan Farrell and Matthew Carey converted scores that made Longford competitive in the game before Mark Rossiter got Wexford’s sucker-punch second goal after 16 minutes.
However, a two-pointer each for Farrell and Carey was followed up by a Cathal McCabe goal to give Mike Solan's side the lead for the first time.
Wexford were level again before late points from McCabe and Jayson Matthews had Longford in a one-point lead going into the half-time. Longford leading 1-12 to 2-8.
Wexford came out strong at the start of the second period, getting the first five scores of the second half. Dylan Farrell responded well with a wonderful two-pointer free off the ground.
Keelin McGann and Paddy Fox then brought Longford back within a point once again.
However, Sean Nolan and Niall Hughes converted a two-pointer each to put Wexford in the driving seat. Solan's side never really got back into the game. Eoghan Porter and another Hughes two-pointer making the game safe for the hosts and sealing defeat for Longford in their opening game of the 2025 Tailteann Cup.
Wexford winning out 2-24 to 1-18.
