Minor ladies semi-final

The St Brigid’s Minor girls powered their way to the Division 1 final with a gritty performance away to Shannon Gaels in Croghan today.

This was the first competitive game these teams have played since the beginning of September but it didn’t take long for the cobwebs to be blown off in what turned out to be a hugely entertaining game.

It took less than a minute for Shauna Loftus to open the scoring for St Brigid’s with a well taken point and another minute for Abby Curran to add another point in a strong start for the girls.

Any notion that this would be an easy match for St Brigid’s was dispelled four minutes later when Shannon Gaels scored a goal to edge in front.

Shauna Loftus then scored a wonderful goal to restore St Brigid’s lead and the teams traded scores for the rest of the quarter which Shannon Gaels finished with two goals to leave St Brigid’s trailing by 1:6(9) to 3:2 (11) at the first water break.

Shauna Loftus found the back of the net early in the second quarter and with both teams scoring two more points, St Brigid’s edged in front with the half time score reading St. Brigid’s: 2-8(14) Shannon Gaels: 3-4(13). Shannon Gaels started the second half strongly with an unanswered goal and two points before St Brigid’s regained the initiative with Marian Nolan driving an unstoppable shot past the Gaels keeper and some clinically taken frees by Andrea Whyte restoring St Brigid’s lead.

The score at the final water break was St. Brigid’s: 3-11(20) Shannon Gaels: 4-6(18). The final quarter saw both sides giving their all and pushing forward time and time again in an attempt to claim the prize of a place in the final.

St Brigid’s outscored Shannon Gales by 6 points to 1:2 in the final quarter to eventually win out by three points in a hard fought game of skillful football where eight different St Brigid’s girls got on to the scoreboard.

St Brigid’s march on to the final on the 21st November where they will meet either Boyle or Clann na nGael who play in the second semi-final next Sunday.
