St. Brigid’s Club notes

Connacht SFC semi-final: Hard luck to Brian Stack, Eddie Nolan and Roscommon last Sunday against Galway in the Connacht SFC semi-final against Galway at Hyde Park.

We want to wish Eddie a speedy recovery after he was forced to leave the field due to injury in the middle of the first half.

O’Rourke Cup Division 1 league: FT St. Brigid's 0-15, Elphin 3-5. In what was a very enjoyable and well contested game at a sun-kissed Orchard Park last Friday evening, our senior men’s team and Elphin stood toe to toe for much of the hour until a late rally in injury time snatched a second successive win for our team.

It took our lads much of the first quarter to find their bearings. We had a number of very good goal chances snuffed out early on but Elphin were more clinical in finding the net. With eight minutes on the clock, they forged 1-1 to 0-0 in front before St. Brigid’s registered their first score, a converted free from Brian Derwin, the first of his five converted frees.

Both sides traded points in a low scoring first half where defences were on top and by half-time, the game was all square, 0-6 to 1-3.

Our scores in the first period came from Brian Derwin (0-3, 2f), Conor Quinn, who replaced the injured Eamon Cunniffe, Pearse Frost and Gearoid Cunniffe.

Eight minutes into the second half, Diarmuid Gately and Derwin had pushed Brigid’s in front for the first time but two Elphin goals in a 15 minute dominant spell from the home side put them two in front, 3-5 to 0-12, with four minutes of normal time left.

Elphin clearly had their tails up going into the home straight but our lads showed tons of character as the game went into stoppage time and reeled off the last three points (Gately, Frost and Derwin) to secure the points.

Team and scorers: Seamus Smith; John Cunningham;  Peter Domican; Eoin Minagh; Pearse Frost (0-2); Ronan Stack; Paul McGrath, Eamon Cunnane; Oisin O’Reilly;  Eoin Sheehy, Gearoid Cunniffe (0-2); Donnchadh Gately (0-3, 2f); Conor Gleeson; Brian Derwin (0-7, 5 frees); Ciaran Sugrue. Subs. used: Conor Quinn (0-1) for E. Cunnane (inj.) (11 mins.); Cormac Sheehy for S. Smith (half-time). St. Brigid’s have a bye in the next round and are due to play Michael Glavey’s at home in Round 4 on Saturday, July 24th 2021.

Ladies Notes: Junior Ladies League: FT: St Brigids 3-6: Four Roads 1-7. Our Junior Ladies opened their Division 4 League campaign with a hard-fought victory over a strong Four Roads side in Kiltoom on Monday evening of last week.

This game marked a historic first for St Brigids Ladies as this is the first year we have ever fielded two adult teams.

Both teams have gotten off to a good start, winning their opening fixtures. St Brigid’s Juniors were marshalled from the back by Emily Staunton who never stopped guiding and encouraging her defence while making critical saves and controlling her area.

The midfield pairing of Emma Gallagher and Juliette McGrane linked the play from defence to attack seamlessly and up front Sarah O Rourke was in unstoppable form finding the back of the net three times.

The was the first competitive game these girls have played together and it was a very positive display which points to a good season ahead for St Brigids Junior ladies.

Team: Emily Staunton, Ava Shorthall, Aoife Coyle, Chrissie O’Malley, Hannah Lennon, Doireann O Ruairc, Amy Gallagher, Juliette McGrane, Emma Gallagher, Michelle Kelly (0-1), Sarah O’Rourke (3-0), Heather McGrane (0-3), Shauna Loftus, Orla Donnelly (0-1), Niamh Donnelly. U16 Ladies championship: FT: St Brigid’s 3-9 Roscommon Gaels 4-9. Tuesday evening of last week saw St Brigid's ladies play the fourth round of the championship versus Roscommon Gaels.

A very young panel saw five under 14 girls start. It was a cracking game where both teams had periods of dominance.

This led to an exciting game that ebbed and flowed which unfortunately Roscommon Gaels won on this occasion by a goal.

There were some great performances all over the pitch, with excellent team spirit and work rate.  Panel: Jessica Collins , Marie Flatley, Jane Hennelly, Aisling Lennon, Lara Deehan, Keeley Sammon, Aoife Walshe, Ciara Fallon, Sally O Hara, Kara Gallager, Rachel Rourke Eabha Brett, Katie Irwin, Amy Hardiman, Mollie McDonnell, Robyn Doyle, Shauna Walshe, Aoife Walshe, Rebecca Keenan, Aoife Minnock, Abbey Higgins.
