Roscommon teams fall in FAI junior cup

Roscommon & District league round-up 8th March

The FAI Junior Cup took centre stage last weekend. However, there were some very poor results from the Roscommon and District League sides.

Castlerea Celtic hosted Swinford, after competing well for the first-half, they just didn’t turn up in the second-half.

Michael Conroy gave Castlerea a 1–0 lead after just six minutes. However, Conor Devaney and Aidan Dunleavey gave the visitors a 2–1 lead after 23 minutes. Kailin Barlow levelled the game before half-time.

However, that was as good as it got for Castlerea Celtic. Celtic conceded five goals after the break to lose out 7-2.

Premier side Skyvalley Rovers travelled to Sligo side Ballisodare, while missing a few regular players they crashed to a 7-2 defeat.

Roland Anderson gave the Sligo side a 1–0 lead after three minutes. While Conal Moore levelled the game 10 minutes later, Mulrennan and Fallon gave Ballisodare a 3–1 half-time lead.

Mark Richardson pulled a second goal back for Skyvalley early in the second-half. However, the hostse went on to score four more without reply.

Division 2 side Glen Celtic lost 8–2 away to a strong Arrow Harps side who play in the Sligo League. Gavin Hegarty scored both goals for a very young Glenamaddy side.

In an all Roscommon and District league clash at Newbridge, Division 1 side Cloonfad United edged out Premier Division side Shiven Rovers following a penalty shootout.

Shiven Rovers had chances to win the game in normal time but in the first period of extra-time Dean Lyons scored for Cloonfad.

While Shiven got an equaliser, they were no match for Cloonfad United in the penalty shootout. They now play Arrow Harps in the next round.

In the P K Trailers sponsored Division 1, the battle for second place and a play off for promotion to next seasons Premier Division is close with Ballinasloe Town, St. Johns Athletic second side and Cloonfad United all in contention.

Ballinasloe Town beat Moylough 5–2 at Ballinasloe. They are a point better off than St. Johns but with a game more played.

Mark Kilkenny scored two and Ryan and McCombe, Anatolii Vovk and Cameron O’Leary getting one each. Dermott Hughes and Leo Donnellan replied for Moylough.

St. Johns Athletic beat Ballaghaderreen 3–0 at Lecarrow. Jamie Tiernan and Tom Naughton gave the winners a 2-0 half-time lead with Conor Murphy converting a second-half penalty.

In Division 2, Boyle Celtic second side beat the Ballinlough side Lough Harps 5–1 at Boyle.

Tiernan Murphy broke the deadlock early in the second-half for Lough Harps. However, that was as good as it got as they conceded five without reply.

Isaak Said and Alfonso Barrios scored two each and Darragh Hensey added one for the winners.

St Cuans/Ahascragh United beat Castlerea Celtic second side 3–0 at Ahascragh.

Liam O’Connor gave the winners a 1–0 lead after 20 minutes and Patrick Mongan added two more in the second-half.

Women's league round-up

Ballaghaderreen Women’s team were very unlucky to be beaten on penalties in their FAI Junior Cup Round 1 game away to a Galway league side Colga.

Ballaghaderreen were the better side for most of the game and took the lead through Jessica Feeney on 26 minutes.

Rebecca Finan added a second on the hour mark. However, against the Run of play Colga scored two late goals to send the game to extra-time and penalties. Unfortunately for Ballaghaderreen they were beaten 5–4 in the shootout.

The race for the Women’s League Championship is finely balanced with just two points separating the top two with only a few games remaining.

Ballaghaderreen who were otherwise engaged, are two points clear at the top with three games remaining. However, nearest challengers Dunmore Town have a game less played.

Dunmore Town beat fourth placed Kilkerrin United 3–0 at Dunmore. Ashling Hynes, Aoife Smyth and Erika Diskin scored their three goals.

Boyle Celtic and Castlerea Celtic drew 1-1 at Boyle on Saturday evening. Clodagh Diggins gave the visitors the lead after 59 minutes. However, Sinead O’Donohoe levelled the game with 14 minutes remaining.

Roscommon United beat Carrick Town 6–3 away at Carrick-on-Shannon.

Tia Cronin with the help of Maria Tiernan, Daniella Kerr and Susan Concannon scored all six goals for Roscommon. Samantha Titiya, Laura Prior and Marie Faughnan replied for Carrick.
