The Portaferry posted a time of 3:56.61 seconds as she narrowly missed out on a medal.

Ciara Mageean set a national record after finishing in fourth place in the 1500m final at the World Athletics Championships at Budapest.

The Portaferry posted a time of 3:56.61 seconds, only marginally missing out on a bronze medal.

Faith Kipyegon claimed her third gold medal at the world championships. The Kenyan clocked a time of 3:54.87.

Ethopia’s Diribe Welteji took the silver medal while bronze went to Sifan Hassan.

Earlier, Sarah Lavin qualified for the women’s 100 metre hurdles semi-finals. The Limerick native finished her heat in third place in 12.69 seconds.

Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent and America’s Masai Russell finished first and second respectively.

The Irish had mixed fortunes in the men’s 800 metre heats. Mark English qualified for the semi-finals while John Fitzsimons missed out.

English finished fourth in 1:45.71 but qualified as one of the fastest non-automatic qualifiers.

In a separate heat, John Fitzsimons finished fifth in a time of 1:48.20. No one outside the top three progressed to the semi-finals in this heat.
