Longford GAA chairman Albert Cooney has slammed comments by RTE pundit Donal Og Cusack and called for an apology.

Cooney hit out at Og Cusack’s comments ahead of the Longford club championship draw and told Shannonside Sport; “Completely disagree with any criticism, granted there are a few tweaks and some adjustments that could be made to it to make it even more successful, but it’s a very, very good competition”.

“It’s what all the weaker counties have called out for years” added Cooney.

“I know there has been interference from a particular individual in the hurling sector” explained Cooney. “He should concentrate on hurling!”

In his hurling championship preview, Og Cusack said; The GAA schedule has two provincial football finals and the start of the Tailteann Cup, which if you haven't heard of it, is a sort of Gaelic football Grand National for disappointed also-rans.

Og Cusack faced questions on his comments on the Sunday Game Live on May 21st. The subsequent video clip has received over 3.5m views on twitter alone.

“As far as we’re concerned, Longford footballers, Leitrim footballers, Limerick footballers there not also rans” declared Cooney, “there all good hard footballers who work very hard”.

“Every one of them has been training hard since last October. That guy in his position to call them also rans is an awful insult” slammed Cooney.

Cooney went on; “I think he actually should come out and apologize for his comments. He was challenged on TV about it and he couldn’t defend himself. He just got smart with the presenter”.

“We’re disgusted with it, to be honest with you, the Tailteann cup is an excellent competition and will be very successful!”
