Injury rules out Longford captain of GAA return

Longford captain Donal McElligott is expected to miss the Allianz League campaign after suffering a calf injury.

Longford start their tricky division three north campaign on Saturday evening when they host Derry in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park (live on Shannonside from 5pm).

“Donal McElligott remains our captain but he’s now out injured and will probably miss the entire national league with a tear on his calf muscle” revealed a disappointed Longford manager Padraic Davis.

“Darren Gallagher was our vice-captain so Darren will step into the role as captain of the Longford senior team, it’s a great honour for Darren” declared Davis

“It’s truly deserved he’s been a great servant of Longford football coming in from the minor team of 2010. It’s a great opportunity for Darren and his club Granard, it’s one I’m sure he’s looking forward to”.

McElligot is a big loss for the Longford manager, one of his star players in the half-back line, but Davis reports better news across the panel, although with a note of caution.

“We have some small issues with soft muscle tissue injuries but we should be alright for the Derry game, but it will be tough we’ve three tough Saturday night games coming up”.
