Lisa O’Rourke’s specialist weight division (light middleweight) has been added to the LA 2028 Olympic boxing programme.
O’Rourke’s preferred weight of 70kg (light middleweight) was not an Olympic event. Thus, Lisa had either to try and qualify at 66kg or challenge her sister at 75kg.
The IOC confirmed, 14 weight categories for the LA 2028 Olympic Games. This follows the inclusion of an additional women’s weight.
Tomorrow Irish clubs will decide whether to join World boxing and allow Irish boxers compete at LA28. Indeed, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) stripped the International Boxing Association (IBA) as organisers of Olympic boxing in 2023.
Last month, the IOC recognised World Boxing as the sport’s governing body, allowing boxing to become part of the LA28 programme.
A total of 196 Irish Athletic Boxing Association clubs have registered to attend Saturday’s EGM, beginning at 11am. The second resolution to the floor is; “That the members vote to affiliate with World Boxing as a dual affiliate with the IBA”.
Whereas, an IABA EGM in August 2023 failed to pass a resolution to move afflitation to World Boxing. The vote was defeated as 71% of delegates voted in favour, with a 75% majority required.
The weights to be boxed at LA are:
