A spirited Leitrim display was not enough as Stephen Poacher’s side lost out their derby game to Sligo.
However, Sligo landed the next three scores, before a Cillian McKeown black card looked like it might change the dynamic of the game.
Indeed, Leitrim performed well with 14-men. A Barry McNulty two-pointer gave Poacher’s side control of proceedings. Leitrim led by three points at the half-time interval. 11 points to eight.
McNulty rattled the Sligo net as Leitirm looked for their first win of 2025. However, David Quinn’s 46th minute two pointer, proved Sligo were far from out of this one.
Sligo followed that up with a goal of their own a few minutes later as Dara Cummins palmed the ball in from close range to bring them within two points.
A 63rd minute Quinn two-pointer gave Sligo the lead before a Jack Lavin goal completed the turnaround for the visitors.
Darren Cox got Leitrim back within four before Sligo’s third two-pointer of the day from Paddy O’Connor made the result safe and sealed the win for the visitors.
Sligo winning out 2-19 to 1-18. Leitrim will need a big win over Tipperary in their final Tailteann Cup game if they are to progress to the next round.
Leitrim have the worst score difference in the Tailteann Cup; with the fourth ranked third place team missing out on the preliminary-quarter-finals.
