Stephen Poacher wants an immediate review of the new two-point scoring as Leitrim fell to another defeat.
Leitrim were heading to a first win of 2025 seven minutes after seven second-half minutes. Barry McNulty’s goal giving Leitrim a 1-12 to eight point lead.
However, Sligo were level within 10 minutes through a Dara Cummins goal and two two-pointers from David Quinn and one from Naill Murphy.
“I’m devastated” Poacher declared afterwards. “The players are devastated. We didn’t come here for a moral victory”.
The Leitrim boss took aim the new scoring system, Sligo having hit four two-pointers in the game to Leitirm’s two.
“An inter-county player clips a ball over the bar from the top of the arc with a gale force wind behind him! How’s that worth two points?” questioned Poacher
“How is that skill? I could go over there with 10 balls and put nine of them over with that breeze. That’s the reality”.
“It’s an aspect of the game that needs to be looked at!" Poacher declared. “If you took those two pointers out of the game today, we would have won the game. We would have probably won the game on the balance of play”.
“The bottom line is, it’s a massive swing. It’s not now a two point swing or a three point swing, it’s a five point swing”.
A Leitrim victory was on
“With 20/18 minutes to go and we were winning that game. We haven’t beaten Sligo in 14-years. That would have been edged into folklore today if the lads had done that”.
Leitrim’s Tailteann Cup hopes are hanging by a thread with one game remaining. Poacher’s side meet Tipperary at a neutral venue in the final round of games. Both sides are looking for a first win of the campaign.
With the fourth ranked third place team, bowing out of the Tailteann Cup Leitrim will likely need to win by 10 points and there is no more than one point in the difference between London and Antrim.
Leitrim last won a competitive match against Longford in Tailteann Cup tie on May 19 2024.
