Kate O'Connor takes World championship silver

Kate O'Connor has won a Pentathlon silver medal at the World Indoor Athletics Championship in China.

Two weeks after taking European championship bronze, O'Connor had three personal bests across the five events to secure a podium finish. It's Ireland's first medal at the World Indoors since Derval O'Rourke in 2006.

O’Connor posted personal bests in the 60 metres hurdles, shot put and the long jump. Whereas, O’Connor’s won the high jump event with a best of 1.81 metres.

The newry woman has secured Ireland’s first ever world championship multi-event medal.

Elsewhere, Andrew Coscoran and Sophie O'Sullivan did not advance from their heats in the 1500 metres. Coscoran took third place in his heat, one place outside the automatic qualification places.

Indeed, O’Sullivan clocked an indoor personal best of 4:16.68.
