Terry Hyland has admitted that Leitrim’s season is based on the Allianz League as fixtures were confirmed last week.
Leitrim face Sligo away, Louth at home and Antrim away in division four of the Allianz league north with a Connacht championship semi-final against Sligo or Mayo to follow.
“As I said before, probably 70% of teams in the country the league is the most important competition, it is the one were they seek progress on” explained Hyland.
“The press and the media put the emphasis on the championship as the major one, but unfortunately there’s only about a half dozen counties who are at it at the level”.
With just four weeks of training available to the opening league game in Sligo, Hyland has not been given much time to prepare his side and admitted few new faces will make this years panel.
“We went with the same panel as last year” explained Hyland, “we have a few lads that were in the under-20’s but they were there last year”.
“To be fair to them, you can’t just pluck a name out of the air and tell them you’re going to be playing inter-county football.
