Colmcille edge past Carrickedmond

Last gasp miss costs Carrickedmond

Colmcille landed a championship win, but were pushed all the way by a resilient Carrickedmond outfit who missed a chance to win the contest at the death.

Carrickedmond opened the scoring with a goal after just 20 seconds! Midfielder, Liam Glennon breezed through the Colmcille defence and riffled home.

Colmcille were up and running when Barry McKeon opened their account from play after three minutes. Eoin Hawkins gave them the lead with a point from play a minute later.

Brian Mulvey was on target for Carrickedmond on 12 minutes before Colmcille went on to hit the next five scores.

Two Barry McKeon efforts, one from Declan Reilly and two scores from the boot of Eoin Hawkins; one of which, a delightfully struck two-pointer off the outside of his left boot left Ger Carburys side five in front.

With 18 minutes played Colmcille led 0-9 to 1-1. Indeed, Carrickedmond then took control of the remained of the first-half registering 1-6 without reply.

Three points inside a minute from Aidan McGuire, Liam Glennon and Cormac Mulvey brought Carrickedmond back to within two points. Carrickedmond capitalised on some uncertainty in the Colmcille kickout.

Carrick had their second goal on 28 minutes. Kyle Kenny acrobatically swivelled his hips and found the Colmcille net.

Points from Sean Egan and Enda Farrell brought an end to the first-half as Carrickedmond led by four at the break, 2-7 to 0-9.

Colmcille hit the first two scores of the second-half. The ever-present Barry McKeon was again on target to open the scoring, with Fergal Sheridan then raising another white flag.

Carrickedmond kicked the next two scores, reinstating their four-point lead through Liam Glennon and Eoghan McCormack.

Colmcille rallied again with three unanswered points inside four minutes. Cathal McCabe splitting the posts and Barry McKeon finding the target twice.

However, Carrickedmond rallied again with two points as they just about kept their noses in front.

Eoghan McCormack and Liam Glennon both on target again as they held a three-point lead with 53 minutes on the clock.

Colmcille flourished in the final five minutes, dominating in the middle of the park as they kicked the final four scores of the game.

Both Colmcille corner forwards of Barry McKeon and Keelan Hudson kicked two points each as they moved into a one-point lead with 59 minutes played.

There was time for further drama as Carrickedmond were awarded what could have been a match winning free outside the two-point arc with the last play of the game.

However, the ball sailed out to the left of the and wide. Colmcille prevailing by the narrowest of margins from an entertaining clash at Emmet Park, 1-16 to 2-12.
