European Under-20 gold medalist is out of the European cross country championship

Longford European underage gold medallist Cian McPhillips is out of Sunday’s European cross country championship in Dublin.

Athletics Ireland issued a team update on Monday stating “Due to injury and medical grounds, Cian McPhillips and Thomas McStay, will unfortunately not be competing at Fingal-Dublin 2021”.

Jamie Battle will take the place of Thomas McStay on the U23 team, while Cathal O’Reilly will take the place of Cian McPhillips on the U20 team.

McPhillips was due to be a member of a strong Irish Under-20 team having won U20 1500m gold earlier this year.

There was no further details issued by Athletics Ireland on their own website.
