Works carried out at Dawn of Hope bridge in Leitrim should prevent further landslide

Leitrim County Council is hopeful that works carried out at the Dawn of Hope bridge will prevent any further material moving after a devastating landslide

Leitrim County Council is hopeful that works carried out at the Dawn of Hope bridge will prevent any further material moving after a devastating landslide this summer.

A report into the June incident has found that the movement of tonnes of material was likely caused by rapid consistent rainfall causing saturation of peat and possible fissures within the soil.

Thousands of tonnes of material moved down Shass Mountain on Sunday June 28th - causing widespread land and water damage according to a report prepared by a company on behalf of Leitrim County Council.

According to the report, which was released to Journalist Ken Foxe and Right to Know under an Access to Information on the Environment regulations request, an area of just under 100 acres was affected but a further 180,000 m3 loose material debris "remains within this area and can be anticipated to slip further."

In a report dated July 8th, inspectors suggested some of the material would move over the coming weeks to months, most likely following or during times of heavy rainfall.

However, works carried out by Leitrim County Council during July to reinforce the bridge suggested that no further movement would occur.

Other works carried out included extensive cleaning of material clogging the sections of the Diffigher river in the low areas and removing peat to place on top of peat in fields The build up of the road by a depth of up to 1.2 metres in places was also required to retain the peat in the fields on either side.

Further studies on the impact of the slide were also to be commissioned by the Council in conjunction with state bodies.

A Coillte report into the slide found that it was caused by "extreme weather events" and practices associated with commercial forestation.
