A murder investigation has been launched into the death of Roscommon native Aidan Moffitt.
The 41-year-old's body was found at his home in Cartron Heights in Sligo town on Monday evening.
It's believed the Fine Gael activist received significant physical injuries.
Gardaí say they are actively investigating whether the deceased met his attacker online and are trying to establish as to whether there is any hate related motive to this murder.
Councillor Liam Callaghan knows the Moffitt family very well.
He says the entire Lisacul area is in shock.
''Aidan was very well regarded and you know very down to earth honest hardworking people and you know Aidan himself was a well got businessman and you know it's a huge loss and a huge huge tragedy, we just cannot explain it any other way.''
