In Roscommon it's estimated there is a 5-day moving average of 3 cases of Covid 19 a day

People across the Shannonside region are being urged to 'Stay Small and Stay Outside' over the bank holiday weekend.

While many restrictions on intercounty travel and meeting outdoors have eased, there are concerns over transmission of Covid 19 in large gatherings.

Provisional data from the HSE West shows that the 14-day incidence rate in Roscommon currently is 89.9 per 100,000 of population, in Galway it's at 50.8, while in Mayo the rate per 100,000  is 110.3. In Roscommon this relates to a 5-day moving average of 3 cases of Covid 19 a day.

Despite the low numbers, Dr Breda Smyth, Director of Public Health in the HSE West says this can change quickly especially with new variants, as is being seen in Limerick at present.

She says while a first vaccine dose does provide some protection, it's only after a 2nd dose that the risk of contracting a variant is significantly reduced.
