Locals have expressed their anger at how the event was handled by the Council this week

A special sitting of Longford Circuit Court is due to take place this afternoon following the unauthorised erection of a marquee in the town this week.

Judge Keenan Johnson yesterday granted a special order to Longford County Council to secure the removal of the tent which was erected on Tuesday to accommodate guests attending a Traveller wedding.

However, the Council was unable to execute the order fully, and despite Gardai and local authority officials monitoring the scene until 5pm on Wednesday , around 100 people did enter the marquee for the party.

A clean-up operation at the site has been observed so far today,  with the Council likely to seek the judge's direction in relation to the non-compliance with yesterday's order.

Gardai say they will issue fines to people who were in breach of Covid-19 regulations, in particular travel restrictions.

Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council Paul Ross is calling for a full investigation into the circumstances of the event and Co-Director of Pavee Point, Martin Collins, says the wedding party should not have gone ahead.
