The Sinn Féin Ard Fheis gets underway in Athlone today.
The party's annual national conference is currently taking place at the Technological University of the Shannon in the county town. Increased attention on the event is expected with local and general elections on the horizon and the party's current performance in opinion polls.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show earlier, party leader Mary-Lou McDonald says it makes sense for Sinn Féin to connect with the public in the midlands.
