A stop/go system will be in place on the route.

Works to address road safety concerns along the N61 in south Roscommon will begin today.

Motorists are being advised to expect delays between Barrybeg and Ganly’s roundabout for up to 12 weeks from this morning.

It’s part of the Athlone North Pavement project as well as the installation of a filter lane and island under the Barrybeg road safety improvement scheme.

A stop/go traffic management system will be in place and it’s expected some of the work will  take place in the evening or nighttime.

Councillor John Naughton is welcoming the start date and says this stretch of road was of particular concern to motorists over the last number of years.

There's going to be delays there over the next number of weeks.

But I think its a positive development in the long term to address significant safety issues at a filling station in the Kiltoom area.

It's a concern to motorists and locals there, especially in the winter months.

It can be hazardous there at times and I think its a welcome development.
