The CMO decided to retire rather than go through with the secondment after controversy was raised about the process.

An investigation into the abandoned secondment of the Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan is due to report in June.

The external review will be headed by Roscommon woman Maura Quinn, the outgoing chief executive of the Institute of Directors.

However, the review's terms of reference mention nothing about finding fault for the debacle.

Instead, Ms Quinn has been instructed to find "learnings" from the process and make recommendations.

Dr Holohan announced he wouldn't be continuing with the secondment to Trinity College after questions were asked about the procedure by the Taoiseach and Tánaiste.
