The Independent councillor says the level of the lake has risen 15 inches over the past three weeks, and it is now at the level that could usually be expected in springtime.

A Roscommon councillor says he's very worried a solution will be found to the Lough Funshinagh flooding only when it's too late.

Laurence Fallon was commenting the day after the demolition of the former home of the O'Meara/ Lyons family at the edge of the turlough due to the flooding issue in recent years.

He says while the surrounding houses aren't under immediate threat so far, the families have to try and live with the fact that things could change dramatically in a short time if the heavy rain patterns continue in the coming months.

Speaking on the Let's Talk show this afternoon Councillor Fallon says he still believes a pipe is the best solution to the problem, but the legal uncertainties around such a measure will have to be resolved, and that is likely to take some time.

"We have to be clear, there is a limit and if it goes above that there's not much we can do after that and, once that hits, it's outrageous what's going to happen,. You're going to have two families affected. My opinion is a pipe is the only solution but I would hate to think that, because of bureaucracy or legal uncertainty, that we'll find a solution when's there's not much left of the village. Time is not on our side".
