A decision will be made in the new year.

Planning permission has been lodged for the connection of a significant solar farm in Longford to the national grid.

Harmony Solar Longford Ltd are seeking to construct an underground electric cable linking the previously granted Middleton House Solar Farm near Kilashee to the site of the former Lough Ree Power Plant.

Plans submitted to Longford County Council call for the construction of transformer compound including a surge arrestor, circuit breaker, lightening mast and the associated underground cabling connection to the existing 110kV underground cable.

Also featured in the design are a diesel generator, security fence, the removal of portacabins and the use of and realignment of the existing access road.

Part two of the application calls for the installation of an underground electrical cable from the site of the proposed solar farm, to the Lanesboro plant.

The underground cable is intended to connect the permitted Middleton House Solar Farm to the national grid via the proposed transformer compound at Lough Ree Power Station.

The former station itself is to be demolished following the approval of planning permission last week.

County planners will decide on the issue in the new year.
