The issue of the colourful bikes in Carrick on Shannon has been the subject of much discussion in recent days

The painted bicycles in Carrick on Shannon will be back out on display soon, with newly planted flowers.

Local Tidy Towns member Phil Faughnan is giving the commitment after widespread dismay in recent days when people noticed the bikes were gone.

Phil says she was responsible for painting the bikes and putting them on display with other Tidy Towns members last year.

Speaking on the Let's Talk show today Phil says a decision to remove the bikes was taken after the council had objected to painted greeting signs hung on them.

The Tidy Town's volunteer says it was decided to take the bikes away last week, but she will now replant them and put them back out soon.

'Last year I painted them to just give a bit of colour around, I put flowers in them, but the other thing we used them for, they were kind of a backdrop for our artwork and we used to hang our artwork on them.

We done up some fun signs and we just put them on the bikes.

The council objected to the signage being on them , so we removed the signage and the bikes are part of the signage so we removed the bikes.

I will put new flowers in them , and we will clean up the bikes, and they will be back in place , we're not going to fall out with the council.'
