Over 50 confirmed & suspected cases of Covid-19 in local hospitals

Tony Canavan heads the Saolta Group of seven hospitals across the west and north-west, and says he's expecting the numbers to grow further.

42 people with confirmed or suspected cases of Covid-19 are currently undergoing treatment at hospitals around the Shannonside Northern Sound region.

The updated figures have been released as 141 people are in hospitals nationwide with the virus, while 1,345 new Covid cases were reported yesterday evening.

[Hospitals are stepping up their preparations for a further surge in Covid admissions, according to the head of the Saolta Group.

National hospital figures have more than doubled over the last two weeks with only 63 people receiving treatment in hospitals with confirmed cases of Covid-19 14 days ago.

University Hospital Galway has the third highest number of Covid positive patients in the country today and the highest amount locally, with 12 confirmed cases, including two in the facility's critical care unit.

Our Lady's Hospital in Drogheda has the next highest figure with 8 patients with Covid-19.

Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe is dealing with 4 confirmed cases, while the Midlands Regional Hospital in Mullingar has three Covid positive patients, two of which are in ICU.

Cavan General Hospital and Sligo University Hospital both have 3 cases admitted, with one patient in each of the facilities critical care units.

In Tullamore, just one patient in the Midlands Regional Hospital has been confirmed as having Covid-19.

The increased number of Covid positive patients is also coinciding with high numbers of non-Covid admissions waiting on trolleys across the Shannonside Northern Sound region, with Saolta Hospital Chief Tony Canavan warning that numbers will grow further.
