Two women originally from Leitrim have been honoured by Queen Elizabeth this week for their work with children in the UK and in Australia

Mohill native Mary Mc Gowan is one of two women originally from Leitrim who've been honoured by Queen Elizabeth this week for their work with children.

Mary McGowan left Ireland in the 70's to work in Australia for a few years but has ended up living there since.

She worked most of her nursing career with children who had cancer, and is said to have influenced many positive changes at The Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne during that time.

She's retired from nursing for over a decade but now works as a community liaison manager at the Children's Cancer Centre as well as being involved in other charities.

Speaking on the Let's Talk show today, Mary said she was told about her Order of Australia award by letter last week, but was sworn to secrecy until the official announcement.
