Majority of Roscommon population now living in towns according to Census

Roscommon's highest populated town is shared with Westmeath across the River Shannon.

The majority of the population of County Roscommon are now living in towns according to Census 2022.

The data released by the Central Statistics Office show that out of Roscommon's 70,200 residents, over half live in urban communities.

38,000 people live in the county's towns according to data gathered in last years census, compared to 32,200 in villages and rural areas.

Roscommon's highest populated town is shared with Westmeath across the River Shannon, with Athlone accounting for close to 23,000 people.

That's followed by the county town, where 6,555 people registered their address in Roscommon Town.

Boyle is the next largest when looking at population size, with 2,915 natives, with Ballaghaderreen and Castlerea seeing a minor difference at 2,387 and 2,348 people respectively living locally.

Rooskey, Elphin and Strokestown recorded populations between 700 and 900 people, while the gender balance among towns and villages was close to even.
