A new project which will link the Royal Canal right back into the heart of Longford town is expected to start in the coming months.
Details of the Harbour Basin Project which will see a major redesign at the back of the Market Square in Longford were presented to local council members in recent days.
The project will provide a more cohesive link between where the old canal basin was sited, and the rest of the canal which is only a short distance away.
Around €600,000 has already been spent on developing the canal walk which has proved hugely popular, and it's estimated that the redesign of the Market Square area and the provision of a covered outdoor performance space will cost a little over €1 million.
Local Independent Councillor Gerry Warnock says he's very optimistic work can begin soon on the scheme which he believes will be transformative for the area.
